In simple terms: a chip is usually small and isolated, while a crack is a longer line in the glass. Chips can grow into cracks if left untreated, which is why timely repair is critical to prevent more damage.

How Windshield Chip Repair Works

Preparation & Cleaning

The technician first cleans the damaged area to remove any dirt, moisture, or loose glass fragments. This ensures the repair resin can bond effectively to the glass.

Air Removal

Air in the chip must be removed. Air pockets prevent resin from filling the void completely, which is why quality repairs use vacuum systems to pull air out of every tiny crack and cavity.

Resin Injection

A clear resin is then carefully injected into the damage. This resin has an index of refraction very close to that of automotive glass, meaning it fills the breaks and restores optical clarity and strength.

UV Curing

Once the resin is fully injected, an ultraviolet (UV) light is shined on the area to cure (harden) the resin. UV curing locks the resin in place, bonding it to the surrounding glass.

Polishing & Finishing

Finally, the technician removes excess resin and polishes the surface so the repair blends as seamlessly as possible with the surrounding glass.

  • Stone breaks up to about 2 inches in diameter can typically be repaired.
